@article{Gallerani_2016, title={Libri paralleli: saggi critici e ibridazione narrativa (Barthes, Manganelli, Lavagetto, Deresiewicz)}, url={https://teseo.unitn.it/ticontre/article/view/1000}, abstractNote={

This contribution aims at discussing hybridization in its relations with the literary genre of the critical essay by analyzing some examples found in the medium-term period 1970-2010. Following the historical outline of appearance of hybridization within Western aesthetics, in the first part of the paper it is claimed that hybridization formerly indicated aesthetic and literary issues related to texts which did not fit into any given poetic principles and entailed moral disapprobation. Subsequently, from the 20th century onwards, hybridization has been associated with a sort of liberation of literary works from the category of genre itself. The critical essay is here selected as a literary genre through which to investigate the concept of hybridization. Hybrid essays were selected by four authors (R. Barthes, G. Manganelli, M. Lavagetto and W. Deresiewicz), from three literatures, and published between 1970, when literary theory was at its peak, and the present day. By considering the structure and style of such works, the second part of the article points out the relationship between the commentary and the rewriting as well as the argumentative and the narrative discourse which reveals the presence of another genre besides the critical discourse, neither essayistic nor philosophical. This parallelism links the essay to the narrative and cannot be interpreted as the dispossession of literary genres by means of hybridization. The final aim of this study is to show that hybridization acts as an historical phenomenon in compliance with a given culture and its market system, even in the case of such a peripheral genre as the critical essay. In summary, as literary theory has been progressively replaced by new paradigms, hybridization has modified critical essays by adopting mechanisms of adaptation, rather than differentiation, with respect to the traditional narrative genres.
}, number={5}, journal={Ticontre.
