@article{Domenget_2018, title={"Service inutile" de Montherlant : l’essai et l’essayiste à la jonction des contraires}, url={https://teseo.unitn.it/ticontre/article/view/1085}, abstractNote={

Montherlant (1895-1972) was in his time a famous author of essays, writing pieces that were characteristic of what Thibaudet has called ‘the lyric essay’. His best-known collection, Service inutile (1935), represents an important stage in the history of the French essay, between Barrès and Camus, and provides a perfect illustration of this middle genre. Montherlant stood at the crossroads of other genres, and borrowed from the newspaper article, the public lecture, the letter, the preface, the autobiography, the novel. The individual essays, when made into a collection, can be read in a new light. I analyse how Montherlant grouped them together, rewrote some of them and ordered them into meaningful series. As to their contents, Montherlant reflects on the cohesion of French society when faced with the problems of the time, but without fully committing himself: he remains ‘on the mountain of Lucretius’ (in his own words), adopting the postures of the observer. He thus follows two alleyways of essay writing, that of nonconformist untimely considerations, but also that of stereotypical discourse, verging on the impersonal and the dogmatic. In this respect, Service inutile is exemplary of the way an author of essays, especially when he gathers them in a collection, can take advantage of the genre’s hybrid nature and combine the variety of viewpoints into a new coherent whole. Montherlant thus highlights his freedom of thought, however uncomfortable it might be to sit on the fence of various opposites: those of being an individualist with a venerable ancestry, a reader of ancient authors caught in the turmoil of the present.

PAROLE CHIAVE:

Essai, engagement, genres littéraires, journal (article de), lieux communs, Montherlant, moralistes, réécritures, recueil, XXème siècle français.

}, number={9}, journal={Ticontre.
