Artificial Intelligence and the Public Sector: Outstanding Issues

Abstract

This paper builds on a report on artificial intelligence and public administration produced as part of an Astrid research project and examines a number of specific issues concerning, in particular, internal governance, administrative planning, transparency and access to algorithms, the assessment of environmental costs, and the exchange of best practices among public administrations. It concludes by high-lighting both the strengths and the shortcomings of the current phase of experimentation with and deployment of artificial intelligence by public authorities.
