Intercultural Education, Teaching About Religions, and Civic Education: A Pedagogical Proposal

The book is directed to school teachers and it contains an educational proposal: developing thematic focuses on issues of law and religions to be explored within the civic education curriculum. The text starts from legal cases dealing with the management of religious diversity, namely religious symbols and clothing and food in school canteens. These legal cases become an opportunity and a tool for exploring the meaning of certain religious prescriptions by relying on explanations of representatives from the relevant religious denominations, and for examining their significance from an anthropological perspective. The approach proposed is therefore genuinely interdisciplinary. At the end of each chapter, topics for discussion are proposed for classroom debate in light of what has been developed previously in the text. The aim is to promote intercultural practices, deepening knowledge of religious cultures and cultural anthropology and fostering reasoning and argumentation skills related to the legal method. This contribution is part of the activities carried out within the framework of Prin 2022 Universal Design for Education: legal perspectives for a new conception of intercultural education (UNITE), funded by the NEXT Generation EU Programme.
