Abstract

The introduction presents the articles in this special issue of the journal, whose theme focuses on great women and the sea in modern and contemporary literature. Some key themes for Wester imagination recur in the articles: the ambivalent symbology of water metaphors, the pervasive presence of sirens as models of subjectivity crossing different worlds and the fascination with female characters such as the queens of the sea.
