The poetry magazine can be thought of as a dialogical space in which a poetic hypothesis more or less clearly takes shape. Among the means put at the service of this end, there is often translation: by virtue of its intermediate position between the practice of poetry and reflection on poetry, translation can implicitly convey choices and values, contributing to outline a poetic. At the same time, it can introduce elements of diversity and variety, widening the space of possibilities. The article aims to determine the weight, role and modalities of translation in two journals of contemporary poetry that are distant from each other in terms of material aspects, structure and poetics, Scarto minimo (1986-1989) and Altri termini(1972-1991). The intention is to take advantage of these two case studies to begin to fix exactly the relationship between translation and poetics in contemporary periodicals of Italian poetry.
