“Berlin Alexanderplatz” di Alfred Döblin

Tradurre la modernità berlinese della Repubblica di Weimar

Abstract

Through Alfred Döblin’s essayistic and journalistic production of the 1910s and 2020s, the article investigates the ways of representation of the ‘Berliner’ modernity offered by the author with his “metropolitan novel” Berlin Alexanderplatz (1929). If considered in the context of the debate relating to technology and capitalism these aesthetical ways of literary representation prove themselves helpful in order to understand the reasons for the prompt translation of the work by Alberto Spaini, author of the only version in Italian of the novel published in 1931, i.e., during a fascist regime that very probably misunderstood Döblin’s intentions. 

Attraverso la produzione saggistica e giornalistica di Alfred Döblin degli anni Dieci e Venti, l’articolo indaga lo sviluppo delle modalità di rappresentazione della modernità berlinese offerte infine compiutamente dall’autore con il “romanzo metropolitano” Berlin Alexanderplatz (1929). Se considerate nel contesto del dibattito relativo alla tecnologia e al capitalismo del tempo, tali modalità si rivelano di particolare importanza anche per comprendere le ragioni che hanno portato all’immediata traduzione dell’opera da parte di Alberto Spaini, autore della sola versione nella nostra lingua del romanzo pubblicata nel 1931, ovvero durante un regime fascista che con molta probabilità poco comprendeva gli intenti di Döblin.
