Autorialità reloaded. Qualche nota (e un’ipotesi) sul narratore del romanzo globalizzato

Abstract

Il saggio si propone d’indagare un tratto comune a molti romanzi pubblicati negli ultimi vent’anni su scala mondiale. E cioè la particolare autorevolezza delle voci narranti e dei narratori a esse sottesi. Se il romanzo cosiddetto postmodernista ci aveva consegnato una serie di narratori evanescenti, disgregati e autocontradditori, oggi, sempre più spesso, capita d’imbattersi in narratori particolarmente autorevoli, solidi e “udibili”. Attitudine onnisciente al racconto, incorporazione di istanze saggistiche, facoltà di commentare i contenuti della storia: queste alcune delle caratteristiche comuni a tanti narratori d’oggi, a rigore collocabili – per riprendere la terminologia di Franz Karl Stanzel – al centro di una situazione narrativa autoriale.

Dopo una breve premessa di stampo metodologico, si prenderanno in esame testi di tre scrittori globalmente noti – Michel Houellebecq, Jonathan Franzen e Roberto Bolaño – attraverso i quali s’indagherà questa particolare morfologia e ci si interrogherà sul perché della sua emersione. Altresì, si cercherà di mostrare come ciò non implichi di per sé la restaurazione di un narratore simil-ottocentesco, garante ultimo del senso del testo, e come anzi quell’immagine questi testi tendano a problematizzare, se non addirittura a mettere in crisi. 

The essay focuses on an aspect shared by many novels published in the last twenty years. That is, the authoritativeness of the narrative voices and thus of the narrators hidden behind them. If the so-called postmodernist novel displayed a series of disappearing and self-contradictory narrators, the contemporary novel often displays authoritative and “audible” narrators. Omniscients, essaystics in tone, prone to comment on the events and the characters in the storyworld, these narrators could well be placed at the centre of an authorial narrative situation, to adopt a term coined by Franz Karl Stanzel.

After a brief methodological introduction, the essay examines three texts by globally known authors: Michel Houellebecq, Jonathan Franzen and Roberto Bolaño. Through the study of their novels it is possible not only to highlight many important aspects of this narrative morphology, but also to understand the reasons of its emergence in recent years. Moreover, the essay attempts to explain why the appearance of this kind of narrator does not imply the restoration of a classical, XIXth century one; on the contrary, this “old” narrator is often criticized and put under discussion.
