Abstract

Among Levi’s works, the The Periodic Table is the one which best represents the senselessness of the division between science and literature and the author’s will to achieve a necessary recomposition between the two. Just like chemical substances that react in various ways, science and literature are both part of the creative process: they allow the author to create a work whose structure is formed by a set of elements and whose content consists of a significant mixture of autobiographic ideas, chemical stories and meta-literary inserts, in a continuous game of cross-references between the two cultures. “To build” -- a verb that can be referred both to chemistry and writing -- well explains what Levi does in conceiving the balanced architecture of the collection of stories, whose disposition also reflects the constituent themes of the work. A philological approach to the text shows how the particular structure of the collection is the result of a subsequent work on the layout of the texts. In particular, the variation-based pattern obtained by the comparison between a group of stories anticipated in dailies and magazines and of the original typewritten manuscripts kept in the Archives of the editor Einaudi, and their final compilation, clearly shows Levi’s attention not to leave any of the stories unrelated. Above all, it shows his intent to build an ordered and per se significant structure that, by transmitting several thematic elements, may offer another sign of what occurs in the texts, thus blurring the distinction between shape and content.
