Il ‘gran vermo’ e il ‘vermo reo’. Appunti onomasiologici sull’eteromorfia nell’Inferno

Resumen

Dopo una breve panoramica sugli studi relativi al bestiario della Commedia, si prendono in considerazione due dei più celebri esseri infernali – Cerbero e Lucifero – accomunati dal fatto di essere entrambi identificati dall’epiteto vermo. Grazie all’analisi delle possibili fonti, ma soprattutto a indagini di tipo storico-linguistico e onomasiologico, si cerca di far luce sulla eccezionale polisemia che contraddistingue questo termine, fornendo così un’interpretazione, basata su dati rigorosi e il più possibile oggettivi, sul motivo che potrebbe aver spinto Dante a impiegarlo unicamente per questi due esseri.

Starting with a brief overview about recent studies on Dante’s Divine Comedy bestiary, this article considers two of the most famous hellish beings – Cerberus and Lucifer – both identified by the common attribute vermo. Thanks to the analysis of the possible sources, but mostly to linguistical and onomasiological investigations, the essay aims to shed light on the extraordinary polysemy characterising this word, thus providing an explanation, as more as possible grounded on meticulous and objective data, about why Dante could have attributed this term only to these two monsters.
