This paper aims to analyze two examples of contemporary mourning memories: Tiempo de vida (2010), by Marcos Giralt Torrente and No entres dócilmente en la noche quieta (2020), by Ricardo Menéndez Salmón. Firstly, the importance of this subgenre is contextualized: it’s a valid alternative to the homogeneous presentation of intimacy in the public sphere. Next, from the concept of autobiographical pact, we reflect on the metaliterary dimension of these works. In particular, both authors consider that the difficulty of writing on mourning it’s found in the tension between the unspeakable personal experience and the need to frame it in a public narrative.
In the second part of the paper, an attempt is made to recognize the dominant public narrative in both works –namely, the acceptance of the father's legacy in a time in which it has lost its symbolic value– and the means that both authors use for its presentation and improvement.
