Though Giorgio Falco’s major works are being studied with increasing attention, little has so far been said about his short stories published in newspapers, magazines, and anthologies throughout the last twenty years. Confident that this corpus can be profitably analysed, I will focus on Mondo macello and Liberazione di una superficie, two short stories included in 2009 in different anthologies concerning Italian labour market. I will employ a close reading approach, combined where appropriate with former critical acquisitions. By scrutinizing the two stories, I aim to identify and discuss long continuities and episodic diversions in Falco’s narrative work. This path will lead me to propose the notion of controlled genericity, both a stylistic and rhetoric strategy by which Falco achieves a peculiar compromise between historical data and narrative abstraction.
